Theatrical re-enactment of Henry II granting Thatcham the right to host a weekly Friday Market
‘’ Hear ye Hear ye, at midday, Friday September 17th, 2021, there will be a theatrical re-enactment, co-ordinated by Torchlight Heritage, showcasing the disruption of Thatcham market by the men of Newbury leading to a royal proclamation which grants Thatcham the right to hold a weekly market, by order of the King. ‘’
Thatcham hosts a weekly market which traces its origins back to Henry 1st and the year 1125 AD. Indeed, Henry 2nd passed a series of royal charters confirming its status and forbidding the men of Newbury from injuring or disrupting the market. A memorial stone in Thatcham Broadway marks these events.
Theatrical re-enactment starts from midday. Market opens at 8.30am. Open to all, no booking required. For more information see the website: https://www.heritageopendays.org.uk/visiting/event/tbc1
