The pub is a quintessential part of the image of England, unique to ths country. Over the centuries the role of pubs has changed, many a Government has enacted laws affecting them, and changing social habits have pushed them in different directions in search of a profit. This talk will look at how these changes impacted a range of Newbury pubs, some long lasting, some not.
The speaker Phil Wood is a retired engineer with a passionate interest in history - he's also quite fond of beer and pubs! He has served as President of the Newbury District Field Club (Newbury's 150 year-old local history society), he rperesents the Field Club on Newbury Town Centre Heritage Working Group, and on the West Berkshire Heritage Forum.
