The Wondrous Boxford Mosaic

This breathtaking mosaic was fully uncovered in the summer of 2019 from beneath a field near Newbury, where it had lain for some 1600 years amidst the ruins of its villa. Dating from around 350AD it has been described as the most spectacular and innovative Roman mosaic ever found in Britain.

The full story of this artistic masterpiece and its excavation by local enthusiasts, working under professional supervision, is told here by those who played key roles in the operation. Joy Appleton, Chairwoman of the Boxford History Project, will open the evening followed by Matt Nichol, a leading archaeologist with Cotswold Archaeology, who will speak about the dig at Boxford and his role as lead archaeologist. Anthony Beeson, one of the UK’s leading authorities on mosaics and Roman and Greek Architecture will give an introduction to the mosaic, and the evening will be closed by Duncan Coe of Cotswold Archaeology.
